International Women's Day 2022
We believe that in order to #BreakTheBias we need to honor the amazing work and outstanding achievements of women in their industries, not simply the women. We asked the CEO of RG|NY and RG|MX, Maria Rivero González, to answer a few questions about her experience in the wine industry.
What has been the greatest challenge of launching a wine brand in 2 very different geographies?
"Thinking that they are similar. Both land conditions are so different that the challenges in winemaking are opposite. In Mexico it might be too much alcohol, wines can get too dense. In the NoFo grapes don’t get enough sunlight and the acidity can get too high. But in the end, this is good because styles are completely different and it pushes us to adapt to the natural conditions and environment."
What is your business philosophy when it comes to opportunity and company culture?
"I’d like to think we are very open at RG|NY. When we need to hire someone, we stay open to the possibility of this person having a versatile position, a different background, or a new mindset. Having everyone think differently is a good thing if we learn how to communicate and come up with better and creative solutions for the team. We are as strong as our weakest link, and we try and work as a team. Always."
What is the most important thing you have learned that vineyards need to do to become more sustainable?
"Work the land. Care for the land day in, day out. Add organic material to the ground and keep the vines healthy in a preemptive way is the best way to have a sustainable wine."
What’s the connection between wine and art?
"Wine is art. In a way. And its science, and technique. Both art and wine evoke emotions in people, and they are subjective and tied to memories. They have a lot in common and I feel enjoying them together makes a lot of sense."
What’s your favorite RG|NY wine right now and why?
"The Scielo Sparkling Riesling because it embodies what we are trying to achieve at RG|NY. It’s an out-of-the-box wine that is unconventional, full of flavor and character. We skip many processes, allowing the wine to be more sustainable and true to itself."
